The BAP Unión, one of the largest sailing ships in the world.
Moored at the Rotterdam Wilhelminapier
This is one of the reasons why Rotterdam is a true port city. On the 8th of August, the Peruvian Navy ship BAP Unión moored at the Holland Amerikakade, the north side of the Wilhelminapier. Right next to Hotel New York. The following two days people can visit the ship, it is freely accessible to all. Various activities are organized to bring Dutch and Peruvian communities closer together.
Upon seeing this majestic sailing ship we are impressed by its grace and overwhelming appearance.
Bap Unión, Peruvian Navy showpiece
The BAP Unión is the largest sailing ship in Latin America. This vessel is fully built in Peru in the shipyards of El Servicio Industrial de la Marina (SIMA). It is the first ship in the Peruvian Navy of its kind.
At sea and abroad, the BAP Unión is seen as part of Peruvian territory. That is why it is also officially a Peru-based embassy.
Four masts sailing ship
This giant training ship has a crew consisting of 244 marines, of which 83 sailors from the Peru Naval School. The ship has four masts and is 115.5 meters long and 13.5 meters wide, with a depth of 6.5 meters and a height of 53.5 meters and a maximum speed of 12 knots.
Despite the classic appearance, the BAP Unión is relatively new. The sailing ship was built between 2012 and 2015, and it was established by a collaboration between the Navy of Spain and Peru.
Special nautical atmosphere
Despite its size the Bap Union has competition from some other sailing ships like The Flying Clipper and the Yacht A.
The Flying Clipper, recently launched at the Brodosplit shipyard in Croatia, is 162 meters (532 feet) long and 18.5 meters (60 feet) wide. This vessel is square-rigged with five masts and has an overall sail surface of 6,347 square meters.
The Yacht A is owned by Russian billionaire Andrej Melnitsjenko. This newly built vessel is 143 meters tall with 3 masts of 90 meters high. The sail area is over 3,700 square meters. This high-tech craft was designed by Philippe Starck.
Unique ships are welcomed with open arms, both by the Rotterdam municipality and the citizens. They contribute to that special nautical atmosphere of our city. Wouldn’t it be great, if The Flying Clipper and the Yacht A will moor at the Wilhelminapier too?!
