Largest building in Europe
This skyscraper is meant as a ‘city within a city’. And yes, it is spacious enough to fulfill that intention. At the same time, 5000 people live and work in it. Therefore this vertical city is the most densely populated part of the Netherlands.
De Rotterdam is located on the south bank of the river Maas. As Europe’s largest building, it can hardly be missed.
Modern Dutch art
Besides office spaces, the 44-storey building contains residential apartments, restaurants and cafes. The nhow Rotterdam hotel is also part of it.
In 2014, it has been awarded as ‘Best tall building in Europe’. The Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) praised the new building for its illustration of “experimentalism of modern Dutch art”. And because “its mass is broken down into three interconnected mixed-use towers”. Robust but no bulky, so to say.
De Rotterdam is an OMA/Rem Koolhaas design. Although this leading international architect firm operates all over the world, this was a so called home match. Koolhaas designed these three glazed towers for his homebase. The city where he was born.
Even though it’s only a few years old (2013), the building has a remarkable history. Already in the late nineties, Koolhaas designed the building. Yet, it took more than 10 years before construction could start. Only during the financial crisis it became possible to build it, because contractors were less expensive.
New Manhattan along the river
Located next to the Erasmus Bridge, De Rotterdam is an eye-catching superstructure that dominates the southern skyline. It is part of the ongoing redevelopment of a former harbour district.
The building is named after one of the Holland America Line ships, that used to depart from the Wilhelminapier bringing European emigrants to New York. But today, it is an important element of what people call the ‘new Manhattan’ along the river Maas.
