Programme schedule International Film Festival Rotterdam 2018
Once a modest festival, nowadays a true film paradise. Recognized and appreciated all over the world. The 47th edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam takes place from 24 January until 4 February 2018. In the last months of the year, the IFFR organizers slowly reveal what can be seen in the cinemas and theaters during the next edition. The entire festival programme will only be available online as of Wednesday 17 January. So, like all other years, we have to be patient.
Easy film selection
The number of films that can be seen is gigantic. But luckily help is offered. The programme schedule allows you to add some filters (sections, programmes and regions) for an easy film selection.
The festival will be divided into four sections.
- Bright Future (Yellow). For young, promising filmmakers, developing their own, individual style.
- Voices (Blue). For established directors, making inspirational films about contemporary topics.
- Deep Focus (Green). For single and collected works of film auteurs known for their considerable movie records.
- Perspectives (Red). For creators of art, music, games and installations, and other forms of media.
And the IFFR also launched a First Aid For Film Selection. So relax and take your pick!
IFFR Festival news
IFFR presents a unique, one-off project from Apichatpong Weerasethakul titled SLEEPCINEMAHOTEL. During the first week of the festival the Staalzaal of the WTC Rotterdam is a dormitory with beds, hammocks, showers and breakfast. Overnight guests and day visitors step through dream-free, non-stop projections. Weerasethakuls exhibits his favorite layer of the atmosphere, where sleep and film, spirits and the imagination, past and present merge.
From Thursday 25 to Tuesday, January 30th several guests will stay at the SLEEPCINEMAHOTEL.
+ Audience jury
Film fanatics are invited to vote for the VPRO Big Screen Award. The festival is looking for an audience jury. As a member of the jury, you get to watch all nominated films. So take this unique chance and fill in the IFFR submission form before Saturday 30 December 2017.
+ IFFR Live
For the fourth time, the festival goes worldwide with IFFR Live. More than forty participating cinemas will screen several films from a line-up of six titles, creating many IFFR related festivals around the world.
Hivos Tiger Award Competition
Recent work by talented artists is the core of this festival. Hundreds of new filmmakers from 50 countries present their films to a large audience.
Again some distinctive films from young talents will be nominated for the Hivos Tiger Award. Last year, this most prestigious award of the festival was worth 40,000 euros. There is also a Special Jury Award to win for the most exceptional artistic achievement. In the Big Screen Competition, a public jury determines which IFFR film deserves to be released in Dutch cinemas and broadcast on television by the VPRO.
Last year, these movies were awarded. Sexy Durga by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan won the Hivos Tiger Award, Niles Atallah’s Rey won the Special Jury Award, and Pop Aye, the feature debut of the Singaporean director Kristen Tan, won the VPRO Big Screen Award.
Performances, talk shows and after-parties
Over the years we spent several days at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Each year a little busier and more difficult to get tickets. But then again, who wants to miss this event.
Regular visitors are familiar with it. They know, this annual festival mainly presents movies from independent, innovative and experimental filmmakers. But even outside the cinemas, there are lots of festival linked activities. Visitors can enjoy talk shows, exhibitions, musical performances, and after-parties.
IFFR ticket sale 2018
The regular online ticket sales start on Friday, January 19 at 20:00 hrs. But Tiger Friends and Unlimited Pass holders are able to purchase tickets one day earlier.
During the festival, tickets are also on sale at the central box office in the Doelen, and at ticket offices of the other IFFR festival locations. By the way, most of these locations are within walking distance from the Doelen and Rotterdam Central Station (except LantarenVenster).
