Holland’s second largest city
Rotterdam, situated on both banks of the Nieuwe Maas, is home to the Europoort facility, through which large quantities of cargo pass on their way to – and from the European continent. This world port city is the second largest city in the Netherlands, just after Amsterdam.
Rotterdam was already a prosperous city by the 13th century when a dam was built to separate the river Rotte from the Nieuwe Maas. One of the most celebrated citizens from the early days is humanist Desiderius Erasmus, born here in the 15th century.
After being bombed to a great extent during German air attacks in 1940 (14th of May), Rotterdam was rebuilt at full force after World war II. Nowadays this is one of the most modern and architecturally interesting cities in Europe.
