Museumnacht010, a night to remember in 360º photos

Museumnacht010 night stroll along Rotterdam art and cultureNo, it’s not a new episode of the fantasy-comedy film series ‘Night at the Museum’. Museumnacht010 is an art event at more than thirty locations in Rotterdam.

Rotterdam art and culture night stroll

We had great fun, last night. As in previous years, Museumnacht010 was a nice opportunity to take a night stroll along the art and culture scene. All participating museums, galleries, and cultural institutions offered a program full of entertaining extras.
Our passe-partout tickets got us access to thirty-four different locations. Spread across the center of the city.

Strange world of clowns and rainbows

First we visited Boijmans van Beuningen Museum. Famous for its exhibitions of Dutch and European art from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century. Besides fine arts, the museum also exhibits a unique collection of applied arts, and design.
This Museumnacht010 was partly dedicated to the new spring exhibition ‘Ugo Rondinone – Vocabulary of Solitude’. Visitors could immerse themselves in an estranging world of clowns and rainbows. And they really did.

Multicolored expressionism

Then we spent some time in Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. This innovative art center is known for its cultural reflections upon social and political predicament and change.
We really did like the strong, colorful expressionism of artist Charlemagne Palestine. We also watched an intriguing monologue from ‘Relational Stalinism – The Musical’, a series of performances directed by artist Michael Portnoy.

Hipster transformation

Our next stop was the Rotterdam Maritiem Museum. A museum about the past and present of maritime life. Outside the museum, historic vessels and cranes tell a unique story about how the world’s leading port of Rotterdam began at that particular spot.
We enjoyed watching barbers of barbershop Schorem transforming hipster men into sailors.

Museum of everything

Then we spent some time in the Kunsthal Rotterdam. This exhibition hall showcases modern masters and contemporary art.
During the Museumnacht010, the opening of ‘The Museum of Everything’ took place. Centerpiece of the exhibition is Philippe Halsman‘s retrospective ‘Surprise Me’. Halsman is famous for his pictures of jumping celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Richard Nixon, and Audrey Hepburn.

Hacked fashion

Het Nieuwe Instituut was our last stop. For eight months the institute is transformed into The Temporary Fashion Museum. Last night, their programme consisted of an extensive range of fashion-related things-to-see.
We watched the Museumnacht 010 fashion show HACKED. Models showed the results of discarded clothing. Designed by students of the Willem de Kooning Academy.

Unexpected places

Last night, Rotterdam’s art and culture scene was displayed in a spectacular way! Offering something for everyone, and everywhere. Even in unexpected places like the Rotterdam Oogziekenhuis. The eye-hospital permanently houses a contemporary collection of wall sculptures.
Visitors who were looking for adventure, could take the Hop On Hop Off bus. That bus brought them to unknown destinations.

Thumbs up for Museumnacht010

Visiting all Museumnacht010 locations within 5 hours, would be sheer impossible. Thumbs up for the 34 art galleries, museums and institutions. They proved Rotterdam a first-class city for contemporary art. And a big hand for the coordinating project team, that directed this nocturnal event.
Thanks for a splendid night, that definitely ticked all the boxes!
